The “art” of crusading for what you believe in and using the gifts one has been blessed with is indeed a challenging and essential part of our lives. I believe we are obligated to do this…in an energetic and professional manner…putting forth time, talent, and money to the development of each crusade. Making the sport of “artistic pool” magnetic and competitive for all has been one of the most demanding crusades for many individuals over the past two decades. It has especially come full circle from the original days of “trick shot” competitions and selected challenges…to one of current status. The history of “artistic pool” is a special fact finding documentation that will help you better understand its growth, changes, and future direction. It is an amazing story that reflects our sport strength. Please visit: www.artisticpool.org for the sport history -- (click “about” section)
“Artistic pool” event schedules continue to grow at the junior, amateur, and professional levels with the 9th annual WPA World “Artistic Pool” Championship in Duluth (Atlanta), GA completing the 2008 calendar of events. This event remains the credible base for worldwide player recognition with full WPA support and sponsorship. Special recognition is due Jamey Gray, one of the new superstars of "artistic pool" for his amazing WPA World Artistic Pool Championship victory in 2008!!
APTSA events has added to the international draw of our sport over the years with the US Open Artistic Pool Championship, the Las Vegas Open, the Masters Artistic Pool Championship and a player led determination to produce and promote even more events as opportunities arise.
The private promoter side of our sport assures fan interest and player goal focus via several avenues of competition, including two ESPN special events – Trick Shot Magic and World Cup of Trick Shots. In addition, Dr. Cue Promotions offers a foundational base of player friendly attractions via the Dr Cue Classic Artistic Pool Tour with league and room affiliated events and the Dr. Cue Classic Signature Artistic Cup events, offering the largest “open entry” field sizes in our sport history. Their amenities include an excellent player prize fund, full field payouts and guaranteed prize money, easy to make shots, plus some unique audience prize offerings so everyone in attendance can walk away a winner.
Please visit: www.artisticpool.org for complete event results (follow links on home page)
Note: A player friendly and accepted new competition called the Extreme Pool Challenge was also held in Las Vegas, NV at the APA Team Nationals. A unique format with exciting and varied shots/challenges promises to make this event a huge "hit" of years to come.
The “infant” nature of our sport has entered a new and “maturing” world of beauty, vision, and promise for the future. Hundreds of artistic pool champions now adorn the halls of our special art form with specific overall and discipline achievements that have helped many players find their niche in the competitive pool world. In addition, several of these “Artistic Pool Playing Artists” have taken the “sport and show” of “trick shots and so much more” to another level with unique shot creations and special promotions to bolster their career efforts.
2009 promises to be even more appealing and attractive for those playing and watching as Dr. Cue Promotions will be bringing the "entertainment" aspects of "artistic pool" into an "open table" / "table trotter" style arena in a very special way. Look for details on this as the new year moves along. The international marketing of “artistic pool” radiates with an enhanced future for positive expansion in a wholesome and spirit lifting manner…all the while seeking an increased player database and sponsor support of events, plus media promotions and fan attracting benefits for years to come. I declare the “state of the art” is “shining" brighter than ever. May each of you be guided to victory and experience the thrill of "artistic pool" as a player, fan, sponsor, and / or member!!

"Golden
Nugget"
Instructional Tip |
SHOOTING AT RANDOM IS "POINTLESS"...AND NOT "BILLIARDS"!!!!
This may be one of the greatest instructional tips / learning taglines I have ever encountered during my multi-decade teaching and competitive career. The credit of this "golden nugget" goes to Raymond Ceulemans ("Mister 100"), who is considered to be one of the greatest, if not "the greatest" carom player of all time. During a 3 Cushion event I was playing in I appeared to be locked into an "out of focus" demeanor, which was being observed by others. Just before the final match I played on a table that I had not played on before, and I saw a sign on the wall with the thoughtful words of this message. After careful consideration I made an amazing discovery -- I had been "shooting at random" without a good pre-shot routine or respectful game analysis of each shot, thereby providing lower "scoring" results than what I had been accustomed to in prior 3 cushion, pool, and "artistic pool" events. It was basically a lesson in "pointless" movements both before the shot at hand and in a disappointing lack of posting a "point" after the shot. I started to take these words to heart since nothing seemed to be working prior to this moment. I took a solid and fine tuned pre-shot mental positioning to each shot and envisioned what would happen exactly in my mind's eye. Slowly I started to enter a "burning focus" domain of attitude and the results were amazing. I was behind 15 to 10 against a very strong player and then it happened -- a run of 8 billiards with a "dreaded" kiss out on the 9th shot. My opponent made 2 more billiards and then missed, allowing me to complete the victory journey 20 - 17. This was "billiards" and a learning joy I will never forget. If you are struggling in your next competitive engagement, make an adjustment in your pre-shot routine and do not "shoot at random". Determine what you want to do before each shot, develop a good mental image of that happening, and let it happen!! You will find your "pointless" past becoming special "points" of victory and consequently "billiards" as it should be played.
Enjoy the roll with this awesome "golden nugget"
Thank you, Mr. Ceulemans!!!!!!!!!!!!

- December 12, 2006 A New King Is Crowned -- 2006 WPA World Artistic Pool Championship
By Nate “Okinawa Slim” Bryant The tournament was held December 8th – 10th 2006, in Fridley, Minnesota at Two Stooges Sport Bar & Grill as the host site and thanks to owners Ty Wilson and Greg Asproth. This was the setting where twenty-five of the world's greatest artistic pool players came to battle in this prestigious event. However, there could only be one winner. The preliminary rounds started with all twenty-five players shooting 40 shots in the 8 different disciplines with the top 12 players advancing to the playoffs. The top 4 players with the highest score received a bye…automatically advancing to the quarter-finals. The playoffs started Saturday afternoon with Sebastian Giumelli defeating David Nangle 106 to 99, Mike Massey defeating Sal Conti 104 to 89, Steve Geller defeating Charles Darling 90 to 82, and Andy Segal defeating Bruce Barthelette 106 to 71 with each of the winners advancing to the quarter-finals.
The quarter-finals started Saturday evening with some highly anticipated matches where five of the players were ESPN Trick Shot Magic veterans, along with two other experienced players and one exciting new comer. Mike Massey defeated Matt MacPhail 105 to 58, Tom Rossman defeated Steve Geller 86 to 60, and Sebastian Giumelli defeated Nick Nikolaidis 133 to 132 in a tiebreaker playoff match. The major upset of the evening is when new comer Eric Yow defeated veteran Andy Segal 103 to 76. All of the winners advanced to the semi-finals.
Sunday’s semi-final matches were very exciting because of the three veterans and the new comer Eric Yow who will be fighting to make it in the finals. However, Tom Rossman defeated him 126 to 112 and Mike Massey defeated Sebastian Giumelli 111 to 76 and now the table is set for the finals to see who will be crowned champion.
The full audience was anticipating the match in the finals between Tom “Dr. Cue” Rossman and Mike Massey. They were team mates of the winning team in the 2006 World Cup of Trick Shots, they competed against each other in the 2006 ESPN Trick Shot Magic where Mike Massey became champion and Tom Rossman was runner up. The battle ground is now set once again for these two renowned players to go head to head once to see who will become the 2006 WPA Artistic Pool World Champion.
Tom Rossman took an early lead at the beginning of the match and lost it one time to Mike Massey and never looked back. It came down to one last shot! Mike Massey was down by 9 points so he had to pick a shot worth the same value or greater to at least tie the match, and hope that Tom missed. Mike Massey failed to make the shot and was defeated 110 to 101, resulting in the crowning of Tom “Dr. Cue” Rossman as the new 2006 WPA World Artistic Pool Champion! It has been seven years since the World Pool – Billiard Association sanctioned the first Artistic Pool World Championship and Tom Rossman hasn’t won until now, always coming close, and always falling short until now. Once announced as the champion, tears were flowing like a stream from his eyes. You can see that this is momentous occasion for him because of all of the hard work that he put forth becoming the crusader for Artistic Pool as we know it to be. This is definitely a victory for the internationally recognized sport of Artistic Pool! First place – Tom Rossman – Gold Medal, Trophy & McDermott Sponsored Cue Second place – Mike Massey – Silver Medal, Trophy & McDermott Sponsored Cue Third place – Eric Yow – Bronze Medal, Plaque & McDermott Sponsored Cue Fourth place – Sebastian Guimelli – McDermott Sponsored Cue
Once again, special thanks to the owner of Two Stooges Sports Bar & Grill, Ty Wilson and Greg Asproth for hosting this championship, all of the sponsors, the players and fans who helped support this event.

- August 8, 2006 ARTISTIC POOL FOUNDATION AND RACK ROOM VISION!!
The internationally recognized sport of “Artistic Pool” continues to build on its “foundational” principles established in 1990…via an expanding “amateur” and “junior” program base of industry supported events and private promoter efforts. “Artistic Pool” is oftentimes referred to as “trick shots and so much more”, primarily due to its multi-skilled presentations and the “artistic” beauty displayed through its 8 disciplines of challenge. The professional side of this magnetic cuesport art form has also enjoyed great strides in sponsor/media recognition since its inception in 2000 under the supportive eye of the WPA (World Pool Billiard Association) and a special committee within its care called the WPA Artistic Pool Division. Additionally, the APTSA (Artistic Pool and Trick Shot Association) provides event and promotional development skills via player supported committee structures. The unified force of the “grass roots” foundation, the APTSA, the WPA/WPA APD, and various private promoter interests is stronger than ever and helps to assure the long term growth of “Artistic Pool”.
Joining in the private promoter efforts to promote and expand the foundation and professional appeal of "artistic pool" for 2007 will be a special Dr. Cue Promotions concept with details to be released soon. All are welcome to try their hand (and cue) at this unique art form.

- May 5, 2007 “DR. CUE” WINS U.S. OPEN “ARTISTIC POOL” CHAMPIONSHIP!!
On May 3, 2007 Shooters Billiards in Southington, CT welcomed 24 of the top “artistic pool” players in the United States. Veteran and conditioned champions as well as determined newcomers to this growing sport entered the competitive arena to perform select professional shots from the 8 structured disciplines of challenge. Each player expressed a focused desire to take home the overall champion title, plus one or more of the 8 discipline title attachments and special player designation of the sportsmanship recipient. (See complete listings below for award winners and overall finish)
As the skill and beauty of the each “artistic” challenge unfolded it became evident during the preliminary rounds that this event would produce some of the highest scores ever recorded in the history of the sport. When all the balls had stopped rolling after the initial 40 shot challenges were executed by each competitor, Andy “The Magic Man” Segal posted an outstanding 250 points out of 341 possible. Tom “Dr. Cue” Rossman edged out Mike “Tennessee Tarzan” Massey, with both players scoring 246 points, but Rossman making more 1st attempts than Massey. “Quick Nick” Nikolaidis took a solid hold of 4th in the initial scoring with a very respectable 242 points. Matt “No Fail” McPhail and Charles “”Spitball Charlie” Darling registered scores over 200 also as the playoff matches took bracket form.
Segal, Rossman, Massey, and Nikolaidis earned “bye” positions in the final 12 player “head to head” match play format. Rising superstar MacPhail defeated Jamey Gray, who demonstrated great promise during only his second event in the pro arena. Dave Nangle continued to show resolve in his “artistic pool” pursuits by edging out the always crowd pleasing Darling. Host room owner/promoter Sal Conti was victorious over US Open promoter and Team USA member champion Bruce Barthelette. Jason Lynch played superbly in his 1st ever playoff appearance, besting long time “artistic pool” friend and fan favorite Paul Danno.
The quarterfinal matches allowed each high points player from the preliminary rounds to remain poised for the final race to victory as Rossman, Nikolaidis, Segal, and Massey defeated Conti, MacPhail, Lynch, and Nangle respectively. The venue filled to capacity in anticipation of 2 great semi final match ups. Nikolaidis posted a victory over Segal in a very close contest. Rossman and Massey continued their friendly multi – decade rivalry in “artistic pool” with “Dr. Cue” garnering another victory this time around. Special note should be made during this match that Rossman made 7 out of 7 wing shots for the 3rd time in the last 3 years.
Nikolaidis and Rossman prepared for the final matchup. Just 2 months prior at the Masters Championship “Quick Nick” defeated Rossman with brilliant shot making and consistent play. Nikolaidis started out with a slim lead this time around and continued to hold it until late in the match, when he missed the most difficult long “yo-yo” masse. “Dr. Cue” made it on his 3rd attempt to take the lead. With one shot to go, Nick was forced to pick one of 2 remaining shots in the program with a degree of difficulty of 11. Choosing the very popular and extremely demanding “circular draw” shot, Nikolaidis approached the table and took his 1st attempt, which would guarantee a tie if he made it and Rossman missed it on 3 attempts. The shot missed by less than an inch, allowing Tom “Dr. Cue” Rossman to become the 2007 US Open “Artistic Pool” Champion.
A wonderful time was had by all the players and fans. The “sport and show” of “artistic pool” once again produced a perfect script of competitive beauty and a promise of enhanced vision for its future. A special thanks to all the sponsors of this event and all those that continue to support this magnetic sport and art form.

- October 1, 2008 2008 ESPN TRICK SHOT MAGIC -- TITLES! TROPHIES! VICTORIES!
The 2008 ESPN Trick Shot Magic event is now history and has become a magnetic catalyst to help grow the wonderful “sport and show” world of “artistic pool”. Normally, I would write “one” follow up story in a “play by play” fashion describing special player moments and specific shot executions with detailed result and award commentary. In lieu of that scenario, I want to present two “event reviews” for your consideration and reading enjoyment as follows:
Review #1 – Brief Facts Recap with Select Notes / Comments
Venue: ESPN Zone Location: New York / New York Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, NV Dates: October 1 & 2, 2008 Promoter: Billiards International, Ltd.
Note: Event produced for 1st time in HD for enhanced ESPN viewing. Projected release date set for 12/8/08 – Please check you local listings for ESPN stations
Results of Quarterfinals (Non – TV Matches): Mike “Tennessee Tarzan” Massey over Sebastian “The Matador” Giumelli 7-5 Tom “Dr. Cue” Rossman over Lucasz “Cool Hand Luke” Szywala 11-9 Andy “The Magic Man” Segal over Mark “Dr. Popper” Dimick 13-11
Eric “The Preacher” Yow over Stefano “The Master” Pelinga 14–10
Note: These 4 matches were very exciting with pressure packed player moments and “edge of your seat” type audience experiences, since the winners earned a spot in the TV rounds!!
Results of Semi Finals and Finals (TV Matches):
1st Semi: Andy “Magic Man” Segal over Mike “Tennessee Tarzan” Massey 11-4
Note: Mike Massey, a multi-time champion of ESPN Trick Shot Magic and the WPA World Artistic Pool Championships, plus a member of the BCA Hall of Fame gave a valiant effort against talented superstar and 2007 WPA World Artistic Pool Champion Andy Segal. 2nd Semi – Tom “Dr. Cue” Rossman over Eric “The Preacher” Yow 13-13* * Note: “Dr. Cue” wins tiebreaker (8 or 9 cushions to $100 bill).
Tom Rossman, 2002 ESPN Trick Shot Magic Champion, runner-up in 2006 and 2007, and sport crusader played to top form against multi – talented artistic pool player Eric Yow. Eric, also a lawyer and preacher, is making his mark in the world of “trick shots and so much more” and remains focused for “multi-champion” status. Finals – Tom “Dr. Cue” Rossman over Andy “The Magic Man” Segal 13-10
Note: This was a match that brought the audience to their feet several times. Scores presented in a see-saw battle of “skill for skill” in the early stages and netted at 7 to 7. “Dr. Cue” takes the lead and posts a final score of 13 to 10. Diamond shaped acrylic trophy and ESPN Trick Shot Magic Champion title awarded to “Dr. Cue” with winner’s check. Review #2 – Personal Perspective and Value to Game & Life
As my hair continues to gray, I have been able to experience the joy of remaining “young at heart” in my billiard journey. It is in that context that I want to share my personal perspective of competition and the corresponding “titles”, “trophies”, and “victories” that are commonly illusive, sometimes achieved, and often forgotten. Over the last couple of years I have noticed a recurring pattern of pool players seemingly not knowing the “greats of our past”. A rather shocking example of this occurred recently when I was playing a top flight player showing all the signs of a future world champion. After our casual match game was over I mentioned the great late Willie Mosconi with his 15 world titles and exhibition high run in straight pool of over 500 balls. A quizzical look from my new found friend caused me to ask him if he knew Willie and his amazing “title” accomplishments and his most remarkable high run shooting achievement. He had never heard of him and / or any such feats of billiard expertise. In another eye opening moment, I was doing a show at a national junior championship with over 200 young stars of the game playing for “titles”, “trophies, and special “victories” from the special moments attached to them. I was doing a couple of special shots from the movie “The Hustler”, mentioning Paul Newman and Jackie Gleason and their roles as Fast Eddie and Minnesota Fats, respectively. Asking for a show of hands on whether these young minds knew the names just presented, Paul Newman took primary honors, while Jackie Gleason finished a close second. The character of Fast Eddie was known by almost no one, and an even more remarkable revelation was that only 4 or 5 hands acknowledged hearing of Minnesota Fats. I found it very interesting that individuals as statistically and / or promotionally famous as Minnesota Fats (Rudolph Wanderone) and Willie Mosconi have appeared to lose their connection to a growing sport base of fans and players. I am sure the power of TV and an expanding internet has much to do with this, since both mediums have provided massive promotional appeal vehicles to increased cue sport activity that is exciting and magnetic to many. “New” faces presenting unique and honed “skills” appeal in “new” ways to young, and not – so – young billiard interests…leaving those of the past on the back burner, so to speak, from any significant fan following. In light of the recent ESPN Trick Shot Magic event, I want to provide some candid observations of what I feel the “titles”, “trophies”, and “victories” mean to me. May each person striving to achieve similar player goals benefit from their magnetic nature and hidden, yet uplifting values! Back in December of 1984 I experienced a life transforming and heart felt vision called RACK – Recreational Ambassadors to Christ’s Kingdom. The term “victory” took on a whole new meaning as I realized that “victories” on paper would fade over time, but could be significant vehicles (while living) to garner attention and/or credibility. In this context others might listen to a special witness God allows and wants us to share in the journey of one’s game and life. Each “title” and “trophy” I have won has provided a momentary joy, but then I realized the true “victory” lies in a further “equipping” of the heart, and how it might be used to pass along tidbits of emotional, psychological, and spiritual value to those pressing forward in their personal quest for a better game and life. Discovering that pool is an artful medium of expression and we are “just watching over it” using appointed “gifts and talents” continues to permeate my senses; therefore, the “titles”, “trophies”, and “victories” associated with the “art” have become tools for which I hope and pray leave a legacy of that special meaning to others. The beauty, promise, and vision of all cue sport activity are available to each of us once a personal heart “victory” is accepted. Submitted By… Tom “Dr. Cue” Rossman RACK and Cue Sport Crusader

Results from 2008 ESPN World Cup of Trick Shots, Mohegan Sun Casino and Hotel, Uncasville, CT -- October 31, 2008
1st Semi Final Match -- Team USA (Mike Massey -- UT and Tom Rossman -- IN) over Team Europe (Nick Nikolaidis -- Canada/Greece and Ralph Eckert -- Germany) 9 - 8 2nd Semi Final Match -- Team USA (Andy Segal -- NY and Bruce Barthelette -- MA) over Team Europe (Stefano Pelinga -- Italy and Lucasz Szywala -- Poland) 8 - 8 Note: Team USA won on tiebreaker shot (8 - 9 cushions to $100 bill) -- Stefano Pelinga and Andy Segal both fouled on 1st attempt, so for the 1st time in history, 2nd tiebreaker attempt had to be taken. The "Art" of Missing
(Player Profile, Tour Notes, "Dr.Cue"®
- The Doctor's In)
I have discovered the "key" to professional entertainment in pocket billiards. You must use properly "timed" misses in the "artistic pool" presentation...to allow for the recital of comedic cover lines. Very similar to what the Harlem Globetrotters do in basketball. They get paid for not only their skills, but also their timed "throwing water" on the audience antics. "Dr. Cue" gets paid for "missing" pool balls at the right time. What a Job!! The skills of "artistic pool" are unique and a joy to watch, but the accent of humor is what I have found to be the greatest attraction. Michael Shamos, the great curator of The Billiard Archives in Pittsburgh, PA, summed it all one time. He stated to "Dr. Cue" that he believed the audience members wanted to see him miss, so that they could hear what he was going to say next. More later on this artform. SHOT
OF THE MONTH
In creating this newletter section on "Shot of the Month", I considered showing a game situation shot, and then give you insightful tips on how to approach it. I realized you can read many of the fine publications in the billiard industry and develop through this method. Therefore, I have decided to give you a "shot of the month", which is a special "shot" of someone, something, an event photo, a "Dr. Cue" view of an interesting pose in his show or clinic, and/or some unique concept in text form, but with visual overtones. This first time and original "shot" is a text imagined item. I call it the "Eeh--Ahh" shot from my shows. I tell the audience that it does not state in any rulebook that you have to start at the table. YOU MUST FINISH AT THE TABLE!! For this "shot" I am starting 8 to 10 feet from the table. I used to start in the next county and appear at the last minute to complete the "shot" at hand. Ha! Ha! As I approach the table in a "charging" one handed shooting manner, I yell out a melodic "eeh--ahh" sound...until I hit, or, what many refer to as my "spearing" a particular ball or balls to their assigned target. This "shot" always draws a "thunderous" laughter and applause, which reinforces my "quip" that "laughter is the essence of humor". Your vivid imagination will see me doing this!! Enjoy the view!!

"FOOD
FOR THOUGHT"
This "Food For Thought" message is intended to make you think, as we so often do in the journey to billiard excellence. I want to give you the "miracle" formula for success in your game. Think about each part and apply regimitized "perfect practice" with conviction to your game...to achieve the "success" you deserve.
STRAIGHT ALIGNMENT + STRAIGHT STROKE = SPECIAL SUCCESS
Straight alignment includes proper aim technique and the correct body positioning to the shot, keeping in mind the cue ball and object ball travel lines. Straight Stroke includes a proper movement of the hand and lower arm in relation to the upper arm/shoulder...with a "slow" backswing on the final swing, and a timed hesitation before the "throwing motion" of the cue through the cue ball on a straight follow-thru line. Couple this with "burning focus" with the left brain and your will experience a SPECIAL SUCCESS in your game. And remember to:
RACK UP A VICTORY IN YOUR GAME AND LIFE!!
Best Victories, Always, Tom "Dr. Cue" Rossman
